Solar do Vinho do Dão

In 1122 D. Maria Seseriquiz, her sister and children, donated the Fontelo farm to the prelate D. Odório and the Cathedral of Viseu.
Construction of the palace, today the Solar do Vinho do Dão. started in 1399.
D. Miguel da Silva, a great humanist bishop from Viseu that retired to Rome in 1540, was known by the important rising construction work done in Paço do Fontelo and in his own estate, where it abounded in the Renaissance manner. During the period between 1610 and 1625 the bishop D. João Manuel, makes significant construction changes in the Fontelo estate. Rebuild the ruined chapel of Santa Marta in the place where you see today, building around several rooms, as the current Great Hall, and start the gallery facing the east. The buiding had several uses, for example, served the army for installation of reserves, and also used as solitude house to Aquilino Riberio, arrested in 1928.
In 1926 the Town Hall takes definitive possession of the wood, the old palace garden and part of the land around Fontelo. Renovating this building has been carried out jointly by the Viseu Town Hall and the Comissão Vitivinícola Regional do Dão, the Dão Regional Viticulture Commission.
The aim was to install the Commission and has taken the name of the Solar do Vinho do Dão.
